Things you'll want to know. . .
Contacting Mrs. Brummel:
Often times I will not be able to respond to your note or phone call until the next day.
*I encourage communication. If you have a question or a concern please talk with me. I'm always happy to help!*
So Much to Learn:
During the first weeks of school we will get to know one another, learn our daily routine, and establish our behavior management plan. There is so much value in dedicating the necessary time to establish routines and expectations.
Daily Take Home Folder:
Every day your child will bring home a red daily folder. Please check this each day. It may contain important announcements, homework assignments, the spelling pre-test, or a graded timed test. The LEFT side of the folder will include items that should be left at home, while the RIGHT side pocket will include materials that must be returned to school. It is very important for your child to bring his/her red daily folder back to school each day. This will help to create a routine and continue the communication between home and school. You may also use this as a way to communicate with me. I will check this folder each day.
Weekly Folder:
Each Tuesday your child will bring home a blue folder containing graded work from the prior week. Please look the papers over and discuss them with your child. Once you have reviewed the papers please fill out the “Weekly Folder Checklist” and send the folder and form back to school the next day. You may keep your child’s work at home. I cannot stress enough the importance of reviewing your child's work. This will keep you aware of your child's progress in third grade.
Attending Mass:
Please take your child to mass EVERY Saturday evening or Sunday morning. Your child made his/her first communion last year and is quite aware of the importance of attending mass. If you are on vacation, traveling for sports, or simply shopping in Bloomington you can always visit www.masstimes.org to find a church near you with a convenient mass time.
Learning Styles:
We are all unique and we each have our own way of learning. Please keep in mind that what works for one kiddo may not work for another; therefore; your kiddo or a classmate may have a different educational or behavioral plan based on an individual need.
Water Bottles:
I encourage students to bring water bottles into the classroom. Tip: Please send your child’s water bottle in a Ziploc bag to avoid messy leaks on school textbooks and homework.
Snacks:
We will enjoy a mid-morning snack to keep our brains charged and our bellies quiet. The children are responsible for bringing their own snacks (light snack, mess-free, and easy to eat). ALLERGY ALERT: We have several classroom allergies this year. We will be a NUT free classroom this year.
Birthday Celebrations:
Due to food allergies and the loss of educational time we will not share birthday treats in third grade. Your kiddo's birthday will still be celebrated in our famous third grade way!
Party Invitations:
Please do not distribute party invitations in our classroom. Please do NOT ask me to make an exception. I hate to say no, but I will have to in this situation. I have witnessed too many hurt feelings and broken hearts when only a select few are invited or when an invitation is misplaced.
Toys and Personal Valuables:
Toys should not be brought to school. We have plenty of toys/games to engage the children.
Volunteers
We will have several opportunities for volunteering in 3rd grade, including reading, math, arts & crafts, holiday parties, computer lab...and many more opportunities! Watch for Remind alerts or opportunities listed in "Notes for the Week" in the red daily folder. Volunteers are not limited to parents. We love working with grandparents too! Be sure to complete the "Safe Environment / Protecting God's Children" requirements before signing up to volunteer at SMS. If you'd like to volunteer to drive our crew to a nursing home mass please be sure to complete the safe driver video found on our school website.
Behavior & Incentives
My philosophy is simple: Shining stars earn tickets and tickets equal prizes. If your child follows the rules I will reward him/her with a ticket. At the end of the week tickets can be used to purchase items from my prize box. Should your child choose to break a rule, he/she will owe me a ticket. The children quickly learn the value of following the rules when they lose tickets and cannot visit the prize box. We handle most minor problems in this way; therefore, I do not send home many behavior notes. If a behavior note is necessary your child will write a note to you explaining his/her behavior.
- Email me at [email protected]
- Send a note in the RIGHT side pocket of your child’s red “Daily Folder”
- Use the Remind app.
- Call the school office between 7:45 - 3:30.
Often times I will not be able to respond to your note or phone call until the next day.
